Buying a car from a Volkswagen Car Dealer
Dealership in NJ is pushing a new Sportwagen TDI DSG with the only option being pano sunroof (and protection package which is of limited interest to me) for 26,730 including destination. Out the door about 29,130. Dealer claims there's no more wiggle room, as this is just below invoice, but I see @vigorlover (#678) buying the same car in CA with 17" wheels as well for $25,149 in December. Gives me pause. I don't want to be unreasonable/unrealistic but I am willing to wait for the best deal. Any thoughts on going rate would be much appreciated. Also, would one ever convince the dealer to throw in installation of an ipod adapter? This particular car doesn't have the premium package with navigation, etc. Thanks for any input.
My GF wanted to lease a new CC this weekend and asked the I go with her to fulfill my manly responsibility of negotiation. Needless to say, I traditionally purchase my cars outright and had no idea of what I was doing. I only hope I didn't put her in too bad of a position. I did do some homework beforehand but think I got a little spun around when we were actually working through the deal with the salesperson. I have a feeling I left about a grand on the table but am not positive. Deal Specifics: 2012 CC Sport w/DSG. MSRP of $30,400 + $400 for dealer add ons that we didn't want (but it was the only iron grey metallic they had and she had to have that color). 36 month/15,000 mile lease Residual: $16,400 (about 53%-54% of sticker, so seems in line with expectations) Upfront: $2,000 including first month's payment and NJ sales tax (7% of payments). I specifically told the salesperson we would be willing to pay acquisition/document fees, title & registration, and NJ taxes upfront but did not want to pay down any portion of the cap cost related to actual vehicle depreciation. This is where I think we got screwed - I can't help but feel that he bumped up the upfront amount on the sly. Monthly Payment: $331/month. Using the numbers above and the MF for April, I get a total cap cost of about $29,800. I assumed that the selling price was about $27,400 based on what the salesperson told me, but I've been trying to reconcile back to the real selling price by backing out taxes & fees, etc. and can't seem to make it work. I don't have the contract since my GF has the paperwork but I'm assuming that the dealer specific and state fees total about $500 or so (not including acquisition from VW credit). Would anyone mind providing some input? I realize that this is purely an academic exercise to massage my ego, but I really would like to have some peace of mind about how much I left on the table. Oh, well, at least I know at the end of the day that my GF got a car she loves at a price that she's comfortable with.
NJ taxes the total of payments.. (so, 7% of around $7200). It's paid upfront... either by you, or by the bank, who then includes the tax payment into the CAP cost (meaning it's paid by you within the monthly payment). There is also an acquisition fee from the bank... usually it's $595-$795, depending on the bank... and, that's probably part of that $1366 number (along with the tax).. Just call up the dealer and ask for an itemization for the $1366.. probably includes tax, acq.fee and registration/title.. I was under the impression that NJ had gone to collecting the first three or four years of registration upfront... but, I could be wrong about that... Nothing seems out of whack, from what you've shown, so far.. Good luck! kyfdx
I went to sign my lease deal this morning, but something looked fishy. My dealer said that the taxes were included in the monthly payment of $199, but it was not stated that way on my contract. It said "monthly sales tax" was N/A. but under "Itemization of Gross Capitalized Cost" sales tax was listed as $587.76. Then under "Estimated official fees and taxes" it stated $1366.76 was either included in my monthly payment or assessed otherwise. Where the hell do they get this $1366.76 number from? Where do they get the 587.76 tax amount from? I'm in NJ and the taxes are 7%. My residual is $12,595. The language is so weird to me. I have leased Honda's before but never had this problem. Can someone help me understand how I will know if my $199 payment includes tax like my dealer says, or that I will be screwed somehow in the end paying hidden fee's and taxes.
Not sure what you mean by the tire package. It has the sunroof and satellite radio. Does not have navigation. That sounds like a high price. I bought mine at Hamilton VW in Hamilton NJ. Very easy to deal with.
