Buying a car from a Subaru Car Dealer
Just bought a new Forester (premium) from Santa Monica Subaru. Paid more than I should have, thanks to the usual dealer tricks with the numbers. I should have insisted on finalizing the price before talking about the trade. If you think the "dealer invoice" price listed on some websites is the price they paid, think again. According to my State Farm Agent, the dealer typically pays about $5000 less than the sticker price on the car. I paid 22500, so I should have started negotiating at around 19500 for the price. Anyway, I liked the car, especially the giant moonroof, something that is a plus in LA. I was torn between the Mitsubishi Outlander and the Subaru, mainly due to the 10yr/100000mi warranty offered on the outlander. If Subaru is so reliable, why haven't they also upped their warranty to match Misubishi, Hyundai, etc? Although I didn't do the greatest job on the price negotiations, I did have a small victory- The dealer financed me at 3.9%, and I was able to drop that to 3.4% with included "gap" coverage, by financing thru State Farm Bank. Should have seen the dealer's finance guy's face when I walked in there with a check and told them I wouldn't be needing their financing. This saved me $1600 over the life of the loan and lowered my payments by $20 / mo, taking some of the sting out of the bad deal I got. Ha!
I got to $25K +TTL so your deal is real good. I got offered 0% for up to 4 years and 2.9% for 60 or 72 months. Im on the 4 year plan. Do it if thats the car you want. Seems like 5 door is more difficult to find.
I know the GTI FWD aspect takes away from the car performing at its peak. But the high grade interior is nice to have on a daily basis. On the dry streets of Los Angeles it may rain a 2-3 months out of the year and not very much. For the few track events it will be benefit though, and too late to whine about it. Thanks!!!
Bought a 2009 Premium hatchback early in Oct 09 at Puente Hils Subaru. Car had 18" rims and STI lip spoiler with some SPT add ons that made the car sticker for over $30K. I negotiated based on the $28K sticker before the add-ons. got the car for $25 +TTL. Its not bad car and now that I have over 1K miles can get into the powerband. The car has power but leans heavily..this is a 2009 so the 2008 must lean more in turns. Its a nice looking car but Im over 35 and many ask me about my boy racer car. Complaints are small but in order of significance: Lots of road noise, but it may be the 18" wheel/tire combo. Cheap plastics used for door skins and dash parts. I could have had a GTI for less and the interior is so much classier and upscale. A bit vague shifter. MPG of 20 is not great but it does have high horsepower & you dont buy this car for MPG. It is economy car body with high output engine so its deceiving. Good things: Smooth ride Roomy Hatch design with 4 doors is all the utility I need. Why buy a SUV? Reliability...?hoping.
Well, I've just done my homework & the KBB says 23.25 k if in excellent condition, for an 09 SE OB with 7k mi. on it. Edmunds says the MSRP for new 09s this trim was $24,895, and Inv of 23,375 (not incl destin.). They also say others in my area were paying $23,331 for them new (dest not incl). So if you say a car that I'm pretty sure was used as a rental (Carfax says "major rental company" and the town was Elmhurst, NY; that is where La Guardia International is, and about 5 of them are on the market in my area at different dealerships, recently bought through the Eastern Regional Auction), if the dealer who owns them now is asking abt 22, 22.5 k, how far off are they in their asking price? Also there are two that look like they were loaners at their dealerships. Same story---pretty low mileage, owned only by same place that is selling them---what abt them?
