Agreed that an idle shut-off would help mpg in NYC! Is that feature on the 2011 TDIs? You asked "if Prius's were so good, why did it take the NYC taxi community app 10 years to start to implement the brand as Taxi's?" Answer: the sluggishness of bureaucracy combined with our general resistance to the new. All things considered, I'm impressed that the city under Bloomberg started pushing for hybrid taxis as early as 2005 and that a third of all yellow cabs are now hybrids. (The courts haven't decided that 33% is the limit, only that the city cannot require all taxis be hybrid, which would mean setting a mandate in conflict with the Fed's.) Drivers and owners didn't get with the program until The Great Fuel Price Spike of'08, and now that we seem headed there again, Prius-driving cabbies are smiling "I told you so!" at their unconverted brethren. BTW, I'm sure you noticed that the only diesel on that Wiki-list of "approved taxi models" was in fact the '09 Jetta TDI, but only twice have I actually spotted one dressed up as a yellow cab! The city has been on a quest to come up with a new, iconic taxi model to replace the disappearing Crown Vic and the late, lamented Checkers cabs, but I've been disappointed so far in the bug-eyed results. I think they should take a cue from London and go with a retro look, a design that references the Checkers models, something along the lines of the American-made Standard Taxi that was part of the Taxi 07 exhibit at the 2007 NY Auto Show. http://autoshow.autos.msn.com/autoshow/NewYork2007/photogallery.aspx?cp-document- id=4679493 Interesting to note that the very first motorized vehicles used as taxis in NYC were electric, especially given all the talk (110+ yrs. later) about the "taxi of the future" being an EV. Even VW is belatedly joining the party, though of course NOT in America.... http://www.plugincars.com/vw-shows-plug-taxi-concept-london-reportedly-close-app- roving-production-106583.html Happy Persian New Year!
My advice is to remember that whether you buy or lease, you must still negotiate the price of the car. All the numbers flow from that. My car price was negotiated for 25,500 on a basic sport with DSG (MSRP 29,400). A few other posts list their price around this number. I heard a dealer volume incentive expired last month, so the prices may be closer to 26k this month, but then again, your dealer may have an incentive to close their year strong. Here is a web site link from the vwvortex forums that explains leasing pretty well: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=794813 Good luck with your CC purchase. You will definitely enjoy driving the car! One other thing to note is that you can get a federal sales tax deduction on new car purchases. So keep that in mind if you are on the fence between leasing and buying.
leased an 09 wolfsburg a couple weeks ago. not many of these left, i guess they only make 12k per year, and hard to locate. anyhow, here are my terms 36 month lease 12k miles/yr $0 $595 due at signing (1st months pmt plus license fee) 6MT, monstor mats/cargo liner $287/mth (includes tax). IMO this was a very good deal. lease pmts was based on $20,799 base cap cost; MSRP was $22,xxx. Residual value at term end is $12,234 I think anyone looking at an SE or SEL should be able to arrive at a similar price, based on similar MSRP Most folks who get fleeced wtih a payment in the mid to low 300's a month is due to their shopping for similar "sport" compacts, which are usually leasing in the mid 300's, so the uninformed feels that the wolfsburg lease rate in the low/mid 300's is in the "ballpark". Also looked at a 2009 civic SI, which i got down to the same price (~$275/mth nothing down). I am quite impressed with the car - feels very solid, the 2.0T is a GREAT motor. My leasing philosophy in the past, which has always treated me well, is to ID the amount you want to pay each month (nothing down), and find the most car for that price range. There is really nothing out there that provides, IMO, a comparable deal given the motor in the jetta wolfsburg, with v-tex (not too bad a surface), heated seats, sunroof, decent stereo. I was also considering a suby legacy SE, mazda 3/6; nothing matched the driving dynamics of the VW per dollar. Mind you i am coming out of a 4 year lease on a saab 9-3 2.0T manual. This car was a blast to drive, but actually i think the VW has a more sporty feel. Sure, the VW has a few less creature comforts that were nice (auto off lights, auto AC, etc), but for $113 less a month, i'm pretty happy! good luck
Congrats! You've worked a great deal for yourself. I guess with the money saved, you maybe able to afford this now: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3488355&page=1
Personally id jump at that. We visited about 6/7 dealships in the NY area and best price i could negotiate was 20.4K. Go get the deal and split the diff with me. :)
