Buying a car from a Volkswagen Car Dealer
Find out if they offer the drivers option which is a purchase, not a lease. You can finance the car for anywhere from 12-48 months with a baloon payment at the end. The payment will probably be only a few dollars more per month than a lease payment and that difference is often made up by lower insurance costs. After the initial term you have the option to trade, refinance, or turn the car in. However, I would probably not try just turning it in unless you have really kept the miles down to less than 12,000 per year and the car is still in excellent shape. The payment they quoted you sounds really good IF the $2000 is all you will pay out of pocket AND you are willing to lease. Just remember, the purchase price is always negotiable whether a purchase or a lease and I would haggle to get as low a payment as I can. I personally don't like leasing. I did it one time on a pickup and I always felt like I was driving a rental. I never felt comfortable with the truck. I didn't want to let anyone borrow it because I always thought, "What if they have a wreck. It's not my truck." Sure I know that when you finance, the car is not really yours until the last dollar is paid. However, it has been a lot easier for me to relax and drive my other vehicles knowing they were "mine".
Car Man, We just bought our 2.0T using the driver's option and with what we got for our trade, it made the payment less than $330/mo for 36 months. Our balloon payment at the end is about $1000 higher than the 57% residual on a lease, but we paid nothing out of pocket on the front end. When I plugged the numbers from our purchase including the trade difference into the lease formula on Edmunds.com the lease payment was $1 higher than our payment on the driver's option - and that was before taxes. Also, just for kicks I figured what our payment would have been using your numbers from post #32 and paying no money down. The payment would have been 363.88 for 36 months before taxes with the residual being $15,512. This also does not account for security deposits and acquisition fees. At the end of 36 months we have the option to purchase the car, refinance, trade, or turn it in. I know if we turn it in there will possibly be some fees we will have to pay, but we will most likely trade. If you can buy a car in such fashion, is there really any advantage to leasing? VW Credit has a little information on their website at link title. What's your take on this? Thanks, Jeff
Not on the 2.0T. You've got to go with the Package 2 to get it. I'd suggest you go to vw.com and go to the Passat page then click on the brochure tab. You can look at a pdf brochure and in the back it lists the different trim levels and options.
The invoice Edmunds shows is a little low, but anyone should be able to by a 2.0T at the TMV price or less. Just remember, when you drive off with that $500 or less over invoice price, yes, the dealership made money (and they WILL make more if you're trading), but the salesman (like my brother who sells VWs) will be lucky to make $100. Sure, he'll make a lot more on some, but I'm looking for a good Christmas present this year! :P
My wife and I just bought an 06 Passat. It requires only 91 octane. My brother sells them and he says a lot of the guys he works with who drive the turbos run 87 octane. I don't know what you're getting by running premium or giving up by running regular. But if your car gets 30 miles per gallon on the highway, it only costs about a half a cent more per mile to run premium. And btw, we've gotten as good as 33.4 in our new Passat on the highway and so far I've only put BP 93 octane in it. :D
