Buying a car from a Jeep Car Dealer
This site has been great in helping me purchase a prior vehicle and now my Jeep Rubicon. I thank all that contribute and I wanted to do my part. I live in Tampa, FL and visited several local dealers with little to no give in pricing from anyone. Margins are skinny on this truck and Jeep is the only Chrysler brand selling. They had no motivation to negotiate. That was obvious. I looked up new inventory on jeep.com, found my truck, called a small town dealer over 200 mi away and negotiated a deal with no trade in over the phone. I gave them a bottom line price and told them I would drive the same day to pick it up if they agreed. From their point of view, they got a sale they normally would not get. I am over 200 mi away. From my point of view, I got a motivated dealer to work with me. They called me back in 20 min and agreed. I drove over that afternoon. This is what I got. 2010 Jeep Unlimited Rubicon Dark Slate Gray with satin carbon rims and the BSW off road tires. Optional equip was trailer tow group, auto trans, 730N Media Center (GPS, 30gig, U-connect, 1 yr Sirius), black freedom top, and $750 destination charge. Total bottom line MSRP was $36,180. I negotiated $33,180 and the $750 customer rebate was subtracted making the purchase price $32,430. Add in tax, title, license, etc and a $495 dealer fee after that. I had some cash down and got 4.99% financing on the rest. I was in and out in less than 45 min. A truely great small local dealer who treated me right. This thing is fully loaded and I am excited to get off road! I was told they realized after negotiating the deal that Chrysler no longer makes Wranglers in the slate gray color. This was the only Slate Gray Unlimted Rubi left in all of FL, GA, MS, and AL. I was told had they realized this in advance, they probably wouldn't have agreed on the price. Could have been just BS but I knew this before they did by the inventory search on jeep.com and this message board. I dont care about the exclusivity, just love the color and I am sure they still made more than enough money off me. I emailed, phoned and walked out of a half a dozen local dealers only willing to come a grand or less off sticker. I finally got one $3k off MSRP (plus rebate). Could I have got a better price? Who knows. Probably not in FL on this truck. If your looking, try calling an out of town dealer and stay motivated to negotiate. Thanks to the board for your help. See ya on the trail.
Mr/Ms sathomps10, I don't know what I said to make you so mad. If you read both of my posts on this, you will note I acknowledge what I spent and how I like it. As a later post mentioned, the dealer makes it on other services of which I was not made to feel real welcome on. Your post suggested that I am an idiot for saying what I did or thinking what I do. I do have a bit of experience in purchasing vehicles as I have owned over 30 cars in my 40+ years on this planet and over half of them were from dealers. In my experience, this was one of least "positve" purchases I had (and for a vehicle which was one of the most expensive). I did expect to meet the sales manager and the service manager which I did in all but the smallest dealers before and I have felt "special" in most of those instances. I mostly take offense on the tone concerning my intelligence. Being a physician and teacher with a tiny bit of education I would have a question with what I said and what it had to do with my intelligence. Especially when the questioner cannot spell "vehicle".
I don't even know why I am going to bother on replying to so called TommyBoy... but.. nonetheless... it may be the reason Ms. smith still tries to teach Johnny 2+2=4. First, we are off topic and.. I check these boards to simply familarize myself with the marketplace and.. to see what my competition is doing. With that said.. i do take it personal when moronic comments are made.. such as If we could there would be no need for greedy car dealers. Look at the Jeep Lineup and.. educate yourself before you make such statements. First.. the Liberty as overdue for a facelift and... therefore.. in the last 12 - 18 months.. it has become a loser. Most Liberties sold are either at $0 profit, or a slight loser. The Commander and Grand Cherokee are on the fence.. depending on the incentive and.. number of days in inventory. Typically.. a dealer can lose alot of money on a $45,000 Commander if he has it on his floor plan for over 90 days. The Compass and the Patriot are brand new, and.. the profit margin on each is very small, if not insignificant. That brings me to the wrangler. If in fact the dealer knows this is a profit generator... possibly $2,000 - $4,000 per Wrangler sold... he has an obligation to his buisness to generate as much profit as possible to simply recoup any money lost on other models sold. Which, in turn brings me to my second point. If the average profit on a 2007 Wrangler is $3,000... and it is a middle of the road Wrangler ($25,000).. the dealer is only making 12% on his upfront investment. This does not include any possible advertising costs, interest paid on his existing floor plan, etc. I would urge you to educate yourself on the profit margin of typical items sold at target, Walmart, Home Depot, etc and you will find the margins are much higher, sometimes exceding 200% or 300%. But.. because this is the vehcile you want.. you again think the dealer has an obligation to sell it to you at YOUR price. wrong. He has an obligation to sell it at the most profit he can, simple as that. Obviously you have a sore tooth regarding dealers and.. you think they are all money hungry vultures waiting to wipe out your savings account. Although some dealers may operate this way, most dealers do not. They are more interested in earning your business, building a relationship with you and your family, and selling you 20 cars not just 1. However... by your statements, you either have not purchased many vehicles in your lifetime, because your obvious lack of experience, or... you are simply the A Typical customer who goes from delerhsip to dealerhsip getting thrown out by every salesman he meets because you offend them or.. think you are entitled to insult them for your own self gratification. Now to get back on topic... I will let you know.. that this whole supply and demand issue will not get any better in the near future. Chrysler is poised to buildout the 2007 model year because of the backlogged sold orders already placed. So... if you are thinking of getting one.. and want one this year.. you best act quick or you will be waiting until fall. :-)
Hi Car Man, I am currently leasing a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Edition at 355.89/ month. My lease agreement does not end until January but I'm already at 37,000 miles. We went to the dealership and they told me that I can return my car, lease a new Cherokee or Commander (MSRP 32,000) with 1,000 down (which is what I want) but my payments would go up to about 467/ month. Is this accurate? I'm in NJ...Do you have any suggestions? Any word on when Chrysler will come out with their "Pull Ahead Program"? The dealership told us that they stopped running it this month... thanks! MS
