MSRP not available for Pre-Production vehicles
The new 2012 Volkswagen Passat is physically a bit bigger, but looks to be downsized in terms of feature content. Fortunately, that also means a much lower base price.

The Volkswagen Passat will be redesigned for 2012. There will be no 2011 model.
There's a lot in store for the 2012 Volkswagen Passat. Not only will it be built here in the United States, but it's also being built just for the U.S. With production based at VW's new Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant, the latest Passat is larger than the last model and rings in about $8,000 less than its predecessor. Pricing is now competitive with other midsize family sedans, though the styling has gotten more sedate and some evidence of cost-cutting is evident.
For one thing, the 2012 Passat will be rolling with a bit less power as standard. The previous turbocharged four-cylinder has been replaced with a 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder producing 170 horsepower (the same one that's in the Jetta). Buyers can choose between a five speed manual and a six-speed automatic transmission. For the time being, all Passats will be front-wheel-drive only. All-wheel drive will likely appear later in the year.
Returning to the Passat after a three-year hiatus is a 3.6-liter V6 that makes 280 horsepower. A six-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission (DSG) is standard. Another Greatest Passat Hits of the 2000s is also back -- the diesel-fueled 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (TDI). Now 50-state emissions legal, the 140-hp TDI makes the Passat the only mainstream family sedan available with a diesel. A six-speed manual or six-speed DSG transmission will be offered, and VW estimates fuel economy at 43 mpg on the highway.
Standard features for the 2012 Volkswagen Passat will include dual-zone climate control and Bluetooth, with options for push-button start, remote ignition and 18-inch wheels. Among other midsize sedans, VW says the Passat is about the same size as an Accord or Camry but will boast class-leading rear seat legroom. We'll have complete information available, along with driving impressions, as we get closer to the late-August/early-September 2011 on-sale date.
