What's New for 2012

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class will be fully redesigned.

Introduction

Mercedes-Benz pioneered the retractable hardtop design in its original SLK-Class of the late 1990s. Now, 14 years later, a redesigned, third-generation 2012 SLK-Class debuts, and once again Mercedes is bringing a new twist to convertible tops.

The latest SLK will be available with three roof options: a standard body-colored retractable hardtop; an optional dark-tinted panoramic "vario" roof; and an upgraded version of the vario roof that changes from light to dark transparency at the touch of a button (Mercedes calls it "Magic Sky Control"). Mercedes is also introducing a new system that incorporates panels between the rollbar hoops behind each seat to reduce cabin air turbulence when the top is lowered.

Initially the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class will be available in only one version, the SLK350, powered by a direct-injected 3.5-liter V6 that makes 302 horsepower. Power will flow to the rear wheels though a seven-speed automatic transmission. Mercedes will later introduce a SLK250 fitted with a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 201 hp and coupled to either a six-speed manual transmission or the seven-speed auto. We'll safely bet that a high-performance AMG version will also be in the works.

The overall look of the new SLK is a bit more aggressive. The headlamps, for instance, are said to resemble those on the 190 SL from the 1950s, while the front end in general has been designed to look like the more exclusive SLS AMG coupe and CLS sedan. The SLK's cockpit has been revamped with a color display for infotainment functions and a flat-bottomed multifunction steering wheel. New features include heat-reflecting leather upholstery and a new driver drowsiness-detection system.

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is set to arrive in the summer of 2011. Check back closer to that date for complete buying advice and driving impressions.
