The 2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class looks to be more of a face-lift than a complete redesign, with most of the changes taking place under the hood.

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class is all-new.
Recent spy photos of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class reveal it to be slightly smaller than the current ML, though the wheelbase appears to be unchanged. Styling will likely be updated to reflect the rest of the Mercedes lineup, with sharp angular lines. It's hard to peer past the heavily camouflaged body panels, but LED marker lights (pioneered by Audi) look to be part of the package.
Regardless of how the body finally looks, it seems that most of the changes will involve the drivetrain. The new M-Class is expected to share its underpinnings with the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee -- a remnant of the now defunct Daimler-Chrysler merger. We expect a fairly diverse selection of engine choices, with many reflecting the company's shift toward turbocharging. Best guesses include a twin-turbo V6 and V8 and a possible hybrid powertrain. A Bluetec diesel could be a possibility, along with a massive-output AMG variant. Check back closer to the vehicle's expected on-sale date in the fall of 2011 for comprehensive buying advice and driving impressions.
