The 2012 Hyundai Veloster is an all-new hatchback model.
If you've been pining for a sporty-looking hatchback that is still passenger-friendly, the 2012 Hyundai Veloster may be just what you've been waiting for. This coupelike hatchback is unusual in that it features just one door on the driver side but two doors on the passenger side. Unlike the small access-style door found on the Mini Cooper Clubman, the Veloster's third door is a normal, front-hinged door; the exterior door release has been disguised to help keep the coupe look intact.
The front-wheel-drive Veloster will be powered by a 1.6-liter direct-injected inline-4 that's good for 138 horsepower. Buyers will have the choice of a six-speed manual or an automated dual-clutch transmission. Hyundai is projecting a 40 mpg highway rating. Don't expect too much in the way of straight-line performance, though a turbocharged four-cylinder Veloster is likely to debut later.
When the 2012 Hyundai Veloster goes on sale in July, expect to pay around $17,500 for the base model. Options will include chrome exterior trim, foglights, a panoramic sunroof, 18-inch wheels, Pandora Internet radio, a rearview camera, navigation and an upgraded audio system.
We expect the new Veloster to shine in regards to feature content, interior room and value. But we really won't know how it stacks up against competitors like the Honda CR-Z, Mini Cooper and Scion tC until we get closer to the on-sale date.
