Samm are you serious? That 2.5 IS a dog...and thats in a Jetta. Put it in the heavier Passat? Terrible. Truly terrible and VW is crazy by discontinuing their best engine in that car (the 2.0T). See, I was all set to purchase a 2010 Jetta 2.5 6MT. All that had to be done was the test drive..but from the specs, that wouldn't be a problem, right? WRONG! The test drive ... Read More
I guess you didn't see the long list of features that VW has on the 2010 Passat that don't appear on the base models of competitors. So one could say that long list of features is what the other automakers "took out" to sell their mid-sized sedans starting at $20k. (Also consider what the it costs for a turbo Sonata or Optima--they charge a premium for that engine over the base ... Read More
On further reflection, here's some other things VW might have taken out of the base NMS to bring the starting price down to ~$20k. All of these are standard on the 2010 Passat sedan, which lists at $27k: - 6-speed Tiptronic (almost all other mid-sized family cars charge extra for an AT) - 17" alloy wheels (no competitors have 17" alloys standard; very few have any kind of alloys standard) - ... For anyone trying to grab a remaining 2010 Passat Wagon, I thought I'd share a post. We're going out today to buy a Candy White Passat Variant with MSRP $31,720 (options include navigation and mat kit). My daughter has a 2007 Jetta GLI with 6 speed manual (I taught her well!) and my son drives a 2010 Mazda 3 with manual (I taught him well too!) Of the two, the Jetta is more fun and more practical. Have you driven the R350? It is big & heavy, with a large turning radius, and, IMO, not that great visibility. I'll let current owners comment on the reliability of their VW wagons, but neither is likely to come without issues. The difference with the VW is that you'll have the full warranty to start with.
I want to get some feedback on the maintanence costs of the 2010 Passat Wagon. I am in the market for a new or new used car. Right now I am considering either a brand new 2010 Passat wagon or a 2008 Mercedes R350 (31,000 miles). THe Passat is on clearance and is going for a great price of $27,519. THe Mercedes is going for $28,999. I have always loved the ... Read More
A new 2011 Jetta or a 2010? I have not heard many good reviews on the 2011, mainly due to the fun-factor being non existent. I have never driven it, or even been in one, so, I really don't have any advise to give if you are looking at a 2011.
If you're comparing a 2.5 liter Jetta to a Mazda3, I'd get the Mazda; if you're looking at a Jetta GLI or a Jetta TDI, I'd get the Jetta.
ok, guys.... i feel rather sheepish. i started this post and accidently listed the VW as a passat... but it's actually a jetta. let me know if that changes what you think. i'm leaning mazda but your input is helpful!! thanks.
Thanks, that's good to hear. :)
Actually, while (according to CR) the reliability of the Passat is one notch below that for the Mazda3, the VWs that are actually comparable are rated equal to or better than the Mazda3. In the April 2010 CR, the Golf 2.5 gets a full red circle, the highest reliability rating. The Jetta 2.5 gets a half red circle, the same as the Mazda3.
I didn't start this topic, I just commented on the silly post above mine. FWIW #1, I agree with you that these two cars should rarely (if ever) be cross shopped. FWIW #2, I've had two VWs and 2 Mazdas; one good one and one troublesome one each. The trouble free VW went over 100,000 miles before it suffered anthing much more significant than a burned out bulb. The trouble free ... Read More
Why compare apples to oranges? A Passat better be nicer, it only starts at $28,000, talk about expensive! Lets talk about reliability as well. VW's are notoriously unreliable. My family has owned 2....never again!
Stunning styling? Lavish interiors? Amazing performance? You gotta be kidding! As much as I love my Mazda3, I would never apply even one of those adjectives to it; yes, it has very good handling and decent fuel economy, however, most recent iterations of the Passat (a car I've also owned) are far better appointed when compared to all but the full zoot (and expensive) Mazda3.
you should definitely go for mazda 3 considering the luxury and fuel efficiency it provides. It also offers impressive capabilities, impeccable handling, amazing performance, lavish interiors, and stunning styling. mazda 3
Hey guys, I had a car accident a week ago and have been scouring the internet for a car that is well priced, fuel efficient and fun (something I can be proud of owning for some time to come). Pre-2006 VWs were prone to electrical issues.
