  • Wow! Ugly!

    Written by: mt2000 on Apr 25, 2011 8:05:45 PM

I just saw the 2011 4Runner on the street. Wow, this thing is ugly! Very disappointing, since I am kind of looking at a new SUV and the 4Runner was on top of my list. Until the Prius and the first Scion, I always though of Toyota as having rather poor design, kind of being the Japanese Oldsmobile. But the Prius and the Scion, as well as the rather over-designed FJ ... Read More

  • 2011 3rd row seats

Written by: jtiner on Mar 21, 2011 10:11:37 AM

I'm seriously considering the 2011 SR5 and have been researching pricing, etc., but I've been unable to locate any 4Runners with the third row seat. There's plenty of inventory (25 vehicles or so) around the area (central Maine) but not a single one with third row seats. I haven't heard back from Toyota regarding this... Anyone have any idea why that particular option seems to be unavailable?

I have been trying to accumulate, from as many sources as possible, any information about problems with the Toyota 4Runner transmission, and with Toyota. By the way I went for the price but the service was exceptional as well. Was not rushed into anything and was not offered to buy anything extra. Below is the e-mail from him. Written by: stateofmaine on Nov 5, 2010 3:43:27 PM

want to add to my previous post that there is a big difference in how reasonable the "wait and see" approach is in buyers' consideration of these two vehicles. namely: the Grand Cherokee (Jeep itself, more broadly) has a well-founded/deserved reputation for poor quality stretching back many, many years. every mention of Jeep on this sub-forum has come with that caveat and commensurate hesitation, and the professional auto reviewers never fail ... oops, my bad. instead of clicking your link i googled it (for some inexplicable reason) and hit upon that Car Connection article first. glad you found it, though. "The 4Runner doesn't let you forget you're driving a truck." sure sounds like CR penalized the new 4Runner for its "back to its [truck] roots" credo with the 5th generation design. my read on that is that CR placed a premium on a ... Oh, here, I think I found it: http://www.thecarconnection.com/marty-blog/1051106_consumer-reports-2011-jeep-gr- and-cherokee-tops-toyota-4runner The link I provided in the previous post has the following statement: "The Grand Cherokee is too new for Consumer Reports to have reliability data, and the 4Runner scored too low in the magazine’s testing to recommend it. At Toyota.com, I tried to compare the 2010 LTD with the 2011Ltd. It twice reported that there was an error. Probably there is no change for 2011. There is no V8 option yet. Has anyone heard of any new options or changes/improvements of any kind for 2011?

As a 4Runner loyalist I eagerly awaited the redesigned 2010 4Runner as a replacement for my 2005 V-8 Ltd. I was at my dealer the day the new 4Runner arrived and left with a pit in my stomach. How could Toyota do this to what was my favorite truck? As noted in many of the posts on this forum, it is clear that Toyota cut corners to save cash on the ... Read More

According to another website (lefthandlanenews) for 2011 Toyota is dropping the 4 cylinder 4Runner. THE ONLY MOTOR AVAILABLE WILL BE THE V6. I guess those of us with V8s will have to look elsewhere when it comes time to replace our 4Runners.

I spotted your post yesterday and have been considering the best way to respond. For many, this has become a very emotional issue. In checking the national Office of Defects Investigation complaints website, ODI complaints, it does appear that there a few incidents of sudden unintended acceleration in Toyota 4Runners, but none so far (as of this posting) for the 2010. It should be noted that the postings in the database ... Read More

I thought not changing the "break-in" oil was Honda's recommendation. And I thought I heard that Toyota had backed off their anticipated 10,000 mile oil change interval for the 2011 models and have gone back to the 5,000 mile interval. (link). If you have some news about the 2011 4Runner that's different, please shoot us a link. Thanks.

I skipped the 4th Gen as I wasn't too keen on the looks, and liked the 3 Gen too much. All have been superb vehicles, and I drive the wheels off them. My 2nd Gen 4Runner had 380,000 mi. on ... While I can understand your perspective, I have to disagree with you. I think the new 4Runner is actually going to inspire more people to consider it (like myself and others I talked with). Sales seem to be very strong thus far, as is evident from dealer lots here in Colorado. The 3rd gen 4Runner was great (design/functionality) - the 4th, not so much. My two cents.

hear, hear! unless you're driving an insane number of miles every year, the MPG difference between the V6 and V8 is nominal at best. like you, i have 33k on my 2006 V8 Sport Edition and get 17+ (mostly city miles) and was really disappointed by the lack of oomph from the new V6. the 2010 4Runner is even heavier than its predecessor by ~400lbs, so the paltry 10hp gain is ... the consensus seems to be that Toyota is trying to steer people who really want the V8 towards the new Lexus GX460 (with the 4.6L V8) but it seems like a brain-dead idea. broadly speaking, Lexus owners are even less likely to tow, aren't they? i'm hoping they just made a stupid decision and make the 4.6L V8 an option for the 2011 4Runner.

I will bet that Toyota will offer the V8 in 2011 or 12. I have a V8 05 and cannot see moving back to a V6 5 speed, especially in Colorado. The extra weight on the 2010 combined with the altitude in the mtns would make this a tough sell. Go to the 4Runner thread on TundraSolutions -- some interesting and relevant info.

I found this link proving that the 5th Generation 4runner is coming. I would assume that it's this year rather than 2011 (as speculated by some magazines) because Toyota is running it's dealers completely out of '09 stock. According to Cars.com there are only about a half dozen '09 4runners left in my Portland, OR metro area. The 4Runner will be redesigned for the 2010 model year (it will come out Fall of 2009). Toyota has been running all of their SUV's 7 years. Rumors have it that the next generation will be assembled in the U.S.. I wouldn't be surprised if it took Toyota longer to get it geared up for production in the U.S., thus pushing it back to 2011.
