Yesterday, I happened to be in my '08 Azera Ultimate with my father in his brand new 2011 Equus Ultimate following me and I noticed whenever he used the blinkers to change lanes, the corresponding headlight (assuming just DRL) would go out. Is that the expected/intended behavior? I thought it was kind of odd, but on second thought the fact is it would make the turn signal more apparent and just ... Read More
Hi gjrudden. Hyundai Finance's April buy rate lease money factor and residual value for a 36 month lease of a 2011 Equus Signature with 15,000 miles per year are .00126 and 54%, respectively. The residual value for a lease with only 12,000 miles per year is 1% higher. Car_man Host Prices Paid: Buying & Leasing Experiences Forum
Lots of good quotes in this story: Mark Phelan: Quality makes Hyundai surge (Detroit News) "the fastest-growing automaker in the world, and it's poised to accelerate in 2011." "Quality was our undoing in the early '90s. Now it's our strength" "Hyundai has performed one of the most amazing brand transformations I've ever seen, and they've done it the right way: with great products," IHS Automotive analyst Aaron Bragman said." "Hyundai has ... Read More
Engines are established technology where little real innovation is taking place, especially in the mass market. I disagree. The mass market in particular is full of engine innovations. Maybe it's just that you haven't kept up with innovations there in the past few years? I could list the innovations in the mass market from Hyundai alone... but that would be off-topic, so if anyone is going to talk about that, I ... Read More
You can mention cars other than the Equus here, others can't. Got it. BTW, engines are electro-mechanical systems. And brakes have been around as long as engines (actually, longer than engines). It's just that you don't hear these days about many cases of huge numbers of vehicles being recalled because of a problem with brakes. Most automakers, including Hyundai, seem to have that electro-mechanical system down pat. Innovation, with added complexity, ... Read More
...and I will see a wreck when some declare it is every bit as good as the established competition. OK, then, go ahead and visualize that wreck. The LS is "established competition" and Equus was deemed not only every bit as good as, but better than, the LS in at least one (read "some") professional review: http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/comparisons/10q4/2011_hyundai_equus_vs._2010- _lexus_ls460l-comparison_tests
Heh, tell us something we didn't already know. :P The Equus testing will be blogged about on an almost daily basis, so if you are one of those interested in a future purchase, how the various drivers at the Edmunds home office react should be of interest. The rest of us will be interested to see what glitches develop over the next year. Here's where you can read all the blog ... Read More
And we can talk about it in here ... so long as the talk is about Hyundai and we're not spurring each other down a muddy path with off-topic bits about each other's pedigrees. Hopefully we won't have to put anyone on a short rein. That would be tacky. ;) Saddle up! 2011 Hyundai Equus Signature: Introduction
Hyundai Equus * 2011 Hyundai Equus: This new flagship sedan will go on sale this summer with a price tag around $55,000. It's larger and more luxurious than the current Genesis and will feature a V8 engine only. Hyundai Future Vehicles
Nov/Dec is when you can expect to see a showroom example show up, but don't hold your breath in thinking you'll be able to purchase one till maybe Jan/Feb. This is exactly what happened with the Azera and the Genesis when Hyundai first rolled them out. Maybe they have learned their lesson and will do a better job with the Equus, but I think there's a method to their madness. Bring ... Read More
"I guess Hyundai still can't engineer a luxury car ride. If there is the slightest bit of harshness on my test drive, it'll have a snowball's chance in hell of making into my garage. Evidently the Genesis chassis was not modified enough. " ***** That review may be a bit out of date. Hyundai has since made adjustments all around according to The Car Connection which has driven the Equus 3 ... Read More
Had to RSVP for the first open house for the Equus in the South Florida area. It was held last night at Rick Case Hyundai and they had on hand the 2011 Equus Ultimate that will be in showrooms is a couple of weeks. It was NICE!!! and was able to play with all the goodies. They also gave each and everyone of us a bottle of "Equus" wine
Hmmmmmmmm...if you notice, they also said the ride fell between that of the Lexus LS and the BMW 7-Series...if that doesn't qualify for luxury ride, what does??? Inside Line 2011 Equus Full Test Some Sport With Your Plush? "Under the skin is a modified Genesis chassis, though the air suspension system is all Equus. In Normal mode, we enjoyed a smooth and quiet ride on good roads, but on rough pavement Hyundai's luxurious sedan transmitted too much jounce and felt stiffer than expected. Tap the Sport button next to the shift knob and the steering becomes more responsive and the suspension firmer. When subjected to tight corners at impressive ... Read More

I said boxy sedans... the photo is of a coupe. But it does resemble the lines of the Equus and some other Hyundais e.g. Sonata and 2011 Elantra moreso than the typical European sedan. What does "curvy for the sake of curvy" mean, anyway? And is it similar to the concept of "boxy for the sake of boxy"? Odd you should mention CR. Since you respect the opinion of CR, note ... Heck, there is even a Sonata lease thread right here at Edmunds with people putting down nothing to a pittance. But not for $199/month, which is the deal you brought to the discussion. I am only pointing out that in the ads I've seen, there's big up-front costs for that deal--which has run since the debut of the 2011 Sonata. As for the ads proving there's no "run" on the car, ... Yes, the 2011 Sonata's high residual value has allowed Hyundai to set lease prices close to those of Camcords. But $199/month with lots up front is no real bargain these days. I see screamer ads for Accords and Mazda6's for $219/mo sign-and-drive. So when will you be picking up that new Genesis coupe and having your mechanic of choice add the HKS et. al. tuning pieces for you? Or will you ... Read More
If you really want a tuned Genesis coupe that you don't have to tune yourself, search for a used one... maybe Google can help there. The tuned car discussion was never about new tuned cars. No luck for me on a Google search for 2011 Sonata rentals. I could only find one hit that had anything to do with renting the car in the US. There were a lot of the ... Read More
I don't know, maybe it depends on where you live. Google it - something you like to do, and find lots of stories about 2011 Sonata rentals - and the previous generation was a rental queen out here. Per google, National seems to be the carrier. We also get Camry rental cars, Mazda 6 rental cars, and other oddballs out here. Or maybe private owners are removing license plate frames and ... they really will buy what they are TOLD is good, what they think their neighbors think is good, or what they previously bought probably for the same reasons. I do give many American auto buyers a lot of credit. ... Read More
...how many of them (with the means to do so) have "put their money where their mouth is" and bought one? Well, in the US, for the Equus... none to date. Why does it matter to you, or to this discussion, that the well-established Lexus ES outsold the Genesis sedan last ... Read More
I just came across an article (blog) in the New York Times, written by Jerry Garrett and he basically trashed the new Equus, Sonata Turbo and Hybrid http://wheels.blog.nytimes.com/2010/04/01/new-york-auto-show-2011-hyundai-sonata- - -turbo-and-hybrid/ Even if I were not a fan of a particular automaker I wouldn't trash them as he did in that article. I'm very surprised at the New York Times!!!!
"The 2011 Hyundai Equus, which will start at $55,000 when it goes on sale in the U.S. in late summer, made its official debut on Thursday at the 2010 New York Auto Show. The Equus is the most expensive Korean vehicle to hit the U.S. market, and whether or not it will be accepted by U.S. consumers will be a critical test for Hyundai." You really think the only reason that hood ornament wouldn't fly in western markets is because of safety? That consumers would actually embrace such a cynical and childish styling feature? I try not to tell other people what they think is stylish or not. That's a very personal and subjective thing. I don't think a hood ornament like that is appropriate for a modern car. Maybe on a 1960 Rolls. And ... Read More
So now it is against Fintail's Law for people to voice their honest opinions here, and report what they see and hear. Sorry if my report from the auto show offended you. Yes, good point. Everyone drives a used car! Which is another reason I have gravitated to used cars of late. It's very easy to find used cars with low mileage that have all the latest safety and convenience features, look and drive just like new, and in some cases have warranties that are better than when the car was new. For around 50-60% of the cost of a new car. (Plus ... Read More
The Equus does sounds more like an incubator car as opposed to using it for a luxury division. "Another big move for Hyundai comes with the 2011 Equus, a full-blown luxury sedan to challenge establishment stalwarts such as the BWM 7 Series, Lexus LS and Mercedes S-Class. I think the new Sonata is much, much more important to Hyundai, strategically and financially, in the USA than the Equus. I expect Hyundai will focus on the Sonata rollout in early 2010 and hold off on the Equus until later in 2010 so they can put some money and focus behind each rollout. But they have other rollouts in 2010-2011 too. What will be interesting is how they position the ... Read More
Good point..unlike american car companies Hyundai is pouring millions and millions into research and development for years. Only now are we seeing their hard work and dedication... The Genesis brand will come sooner than later. This time last year we thought Hyundai might bring in the Equus in 2012 or 2013. Now that has been moved up to 2010.
