I wouldn't even consider a 2011 Mazda3; my 2009 Mazda3 is just fine thank you. That said, I would very much consider a 2012 SkyActiv-G or better still, a 2013 SkyActiv-D. The above said, considering how much less the 2011 Mazda3 costs versus the 2012 Focus (as close to apples to apples as one can get), you can buy a bunch of gas with the difference. The VW (Jetta) Sportwagen is an alternative at a similar price point. It is a real wagon, sleek and highly rated, though not with the fuel economy, nor quite as handsome and feature-laden as the 2012 Focus wagon. But if the 2012 Focus wagon is not offered here, the VW is probably the only alternative of similar price and class.

I agree the 3/4 view is very similar. Along with MPG's and HP, the Focus beats it in interior and front end styling. Subaru has never been very bold with their front end styling, remember the pig nose. I guess I wonder if AWD is really needed in a C segment car. I had the driver's seat about 1/2 the way back and the rear diver's seat postion was cramped - my wife's knees brushed the back of the seat and she needed to do a bit of contorting to get in without smacking anything. I think you're romanticizing it a bit. The 1987 Camry sedan actually had 42.9" front legroom and 34.4 rear, and it was 182" long. The 2012 Focus sedan has 41.9" front legroom and 33.2" rear, and it is 178" long (Hatch is 171.6"). The Camry has 2.2" more legroom added up in both rows, but it's four inches longer. I'm about 5'6 also, so netranger's comment concerns me a little bit. Then again, I'm coming from a celica, which has a pretty cocoonish cockpit design as well, so maybe I wouldn't notice anyway.

The 2012 Ford Focus SEL at my dealer's showroom was a disappointment. Although the fit and finish were excellent, the driver/passenger area is too cramped. The transmission in the new Focus is nothing like the POS 6 speed in the Fusion. I have a 2010 Fusion that I am trading in because of transmission and air in the cooling system concerns. I know two people who own Fiesta's and both have only good things to say about the smooth shifting transmission and love the car overall. Whether or not they have had to rapidly stop from 65 mph I don't know. Which tranny? Ford's automatic used in the Fiesta and Focus? Don't actually know as I'm a self avowed manual transmission bigot and don't really follow automatic transmissions all that much. That said, I do wish Ford would use the excellent 6-Speed manual from the Mazda3 in the new Focus.

Keep in mind that when Car & Driver tested the Fiesta they only got 29 mpg from it; not a heck of a lot better than what they got from the much more powerful Focus. From my perspective, you're making a mountain out of a mole hill; I seriously doubt you're going to see even a three mpg difference between the two cars (unless you drive the Focus for all its ... Backy: The Focus has 2" more leg room in the back seat than the Fiesta. I have attached the comparison. Look how close in size everything is. I read reports from car and driver and motor trend and they are getting around 27mpg with the focus. I think it depends on what you're watching. Sporting event seem to have a lot of the hamster commercials versus the Optima. Younger demographic for the sporting events has them spending their money on the hipster Soul versus the family sedan. Targeted marketing versus the shotgun approach.

I think Kia blew their early 2011 marketing budget on the Optima. I am seeing ads for it everywhere, including the Super Bowl. Optima is much more important for Kia than a Forte hatch--even if you and I prefer a Forte hatch.

about the '12 Ford Focus sedan looking pretty good. It's true, the hatch looks generic on the sweeping fold around taillight. Have to see the cars in person, including the 2012 Kia Rio hatchback and sedan. The 2012 Ford Focus is starting to look more and more like a great choice for a solid compact car.

According to autoblog, the 2012 Rio is less than one inch longer than the prior version. So it definitely remains in Fiesta/Fit turf. Looks nice, btw, though I think the front is a bit too busy.

You do realize the Rio competes with the Fiesta/Accent/Fit/Versa/etc. crowd right? The Focus/Cruze/Civic/Elantra/Forte/etc. are all a step up and a size bigger than the Rio and it's competitors. Unless Kia made the dimensions of the Rio larger now to fit in with the rest of the C segment cars?

just wonderful. Red is nice but that Goldfinger color is more what I want. I will hold out for what I want and ya know, when I look long and hard at the 2012 Ford Focus hatch or sedan, transmission doesn't matter. Despite being 6-ft wide (fat) like the '06 Lexus LS430, the Focus III in the LA Autoshow has no rear leg room behind the front passenger seat, contrary to the sample I saw about a year prior at a focus group. CD’s short-take road test on the 2012 Focus is up. Their tests showed the 0-60 is 7.6 seconds with the automatic, which is darn good for a car that gets 37 mpg. I think unheard of for the C-segment. CD seems only mildly warm on the Focus, yet they raved over the current Mazda 3, which the Focus meets or exceeds in almost every category. Go figure.

hatchback in 5-speeds, painted 16" wheels and it came out to around $20,800 from the Car and Driver link. That with the Goldfinger color. Includes a sport tuning package and stiffened suspension. In short, the Titanium suspension got great reviews, but the normal suspension did very well also. The author also clarifies that there may be some configuration errors on the Ford website.

I dont see any way the Focus will be matching the 29/40 of the Elantra when the Fiesta gets that mileage and weighs hundreds of lbs less than the Focus Ford is claiming they will get 40mpg on the highway, with some sort of SFE package like the Fiesta.
