Since its debut a short time ago, the Scion brand has won over many young buyers thanks to its trendy image and Toyota-backed reputation. However, one of its debut models, the xA, was pretty much a dud. Looking and feeling too much like a typical economy car, it was neither hip nor cool and seemed generally out of place in the Scion lineup.
Its replacement is the all-new Scion xD. Looking like what we've described as a snub-nose 1916 Mack AC truck, the xD is now the brand's entry-level model. It has a more powerful engine, a lengthy list of standard equipment and an abundance of dealer-installed extras -- especially the audio options.
Many automakers have struggled to offer inexpensive cars that don't make the owners feel like they are in a penalty box when it comes to style and enjoyment. With the xD, Scion has bucked the trend. While there are some downsides such as a lack of cargo space and oddly placed gauges, this vehicle otherwise presents a clear advantage in the intangible, X-factor category.
Current Scion xD
The Scion xD is a four-door subcompact hatchback that comes in one trim level. The sole engine offering is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with variable valve timing that produces 128 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. Transmission choices include a standard five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic.
Like all Scions, the xD hatchback comes with an extensive standard features list and very few factory options. The standard features include full power accessories, remote keyless entry, air-conditioning, cruise control, antilock brakes (with brake assist), stability control, front seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Since the Scion xD caters to the youth market, the standard audio system consists of a Pioneer stereo with a large display screen, iPod integration and an RCA jack that allows owners to easily add a subwoofer. An available upgraded system has HD radio, more jacks to hook up external amplifiers/speakers/subwoofer and controls that closely mimic an iPod's, making the use of that iconic device more intuitive. A navigation system is also available.
While there are no factory options outside of transmission choice, there is a laundry list of available dealer-installed options that lets buyers customize their xD in a way that reflects their individual style. With more than 40 available accessories including larger wheels and tires, quick-shift kits, bigger brakes, lowering springs, an exhaust system, a carbon-fiber engine cover and an overhead console, you won't likely see two xDs equipped the same way. In addition, Scion encourages aftermarket companies to also develop accessories for their vehicles, so the xD owner will have no shortage of products with which to further individualize their vehicle.
On the road, the Scion xD's 128-hp engine makes it more satisfying to drive than other cars in the class. The hatchback also feels more substantial than one might expect, a result of the car's high beltline and heavier curb weight. Ride quality is also quite good. The only major drawbacks to the xD are its center-mounted gauges, which take some getting used to, and cargo capacity that's a bit less than the segment's average.
Used Scion xD
The current-generation Scion xD debuted for 2008 to replace the xA as the company's entry-level car. Stability control was optional until 2010, so used shoppers would be wise to note if an individual xD is so-equipped. Apart from that and audio system upgrades for '10, the xD has been unchanged.
