many folks still expect grass huts and skirts in Hawaii. I was born on Molokai (how many haole boys you think can say that?!), we moved to Waianae when I was 3 weeks old, but then we moved to the mainland before I was 3 years old. I moved back to Hawaii after (finally!) completing college at the end of 1988 and stayed until an overseas assignment in 1996, after which I moved here to Texas. In 1988, when I told my friends that I was moving to Hawaii the most common reaction was, "You'll be back in less than 6 months!" Of course, folks in Hawaii thought the same in spite of my having been born there; it was hard to get that first job. I think the mainland folks generally think of Hawaii as a vacation spot only; the perception is that everyone wants to visit there but no one really wants to live there! You may know that many military wives spend 99% of their time on base and try to minimize all contact with locals. They act like they were stationed in Korea or mainland China or somewhere. I work for the phone company (Yep, that one) and even funnier is the perception that Hawaii is backward technologically. Many are shocked to find the saturation level of fiber optic cable and cell phone usage on Oahu. Some attitudes are not disturbed overly much by the facts....
