Re: Something To Ponder... [hpmctorque] by gagrice

would you favor reducing or repealing the current gasoline tax? Why or why not? I am not thrilled with the Federal Tax on gas. I have gotten used to it. Though I do not believe it is all used as it was purported to be used. If it is a tax to maintain the infrastructure that is fine. If it gets used for any other purpose I am against it. The issue for me is the huge state tax in some places. CA being the worst. And what are we getting for that tax? Last I checked CA tops the list of the 50 states at about 64 cents per gallon. It changes as there is sales tax of 7.75% added on top of the other taxes. I would be surprised looking at all the potholes in the roads around here, if even half goes for the intended purpose. Next to Illinois and NY I would imagine we have the most shysters in our legislature and administration. They have stolen every source of revenue to support their pet projects and social programs. They even ripped off the schools by not using the lottery money as it was intended. So for me to say I would agree that one penny more tax on anything in this state was good, is not going to happen. Where is that rope. Hang em all from the Golden Gate Bridge would be my remedy for this states government thieves.

Re: Why no two-way advanced remote start for '11 Denali? [steve_] by bookm_danno on Tue May 10 17:29:53 PDT 2011

The Denali IS a poor man's Escalade. Same motor & suspension, sans the $10k badge. Still, money no object, I do like the looks of the caddy. Had to sell my '98 Expedition and trade the '06 Buick to make the deal as it was. I thought the button count was too high on the Expy back in '98. Had reliability concerns back then with all it came with, but the Expy turned out to be the best I've ever owned - no rust, no drips, no rattles in 100k miles. Very few repairs....so you never can tell. So far, 15.7 mpg worst, 17.9 mpg best with the Denali - it's not great by any standards, but that's pretty impressive for 6.2L, no matter how you slice that onion. I've driven 460's and 454's under the hood, and they'd be no match for this thing, not to mention twice the mileage or more, so progress has been made. I was hoping/counting on at least a consistent 14mpg combined, so I think it'll meet that expectation at least.

Re: hybridhell [hybridhell] by rmgilden on Tue May 10 11:38:14 PDT 2011

Interestingly, just yesterday I was driving from Los Angeles to San Jose on I-5 and I had a major failure. My 2008 Escape Hybrid completely failed....I lost all electricity, power steering, brakes....everything. I safely coasted to a stop on the side of the road VERY glad that it happened around 3pm and not on the Grapevine, at night, or with my children in the car because I had no power for hazards and couldn't lock the doors. The vehicle was towed to a dealership 55 miles inland and I am awaiting the analysis. I am renting a car and will have to drive back 3 hours south to drop off the rental and pick up the Escape WHENEVER it's fixed. If this is an expensive repair (which I am expecting it to be), this will be the last Ford I purchase.

Sorry Al not AGW by gagrice on Tue May 10 06:20:29 PDT 2011

WASHINGTON (AP) — April was a historic month for wild weather in the United States, and it wasn't just the killer tornado outbreak that set records, according to scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. April included an odd mix of downpours, droughts and wildfires. Six states — Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia — set records for the wettest April since 1895. Kentucky, for example, got nearly a foot of rain, which was more than three times its normal for the month, NOAA reported. U.S. scientists also looked for the fingerprints of global warming and La Nina on last month's deadly tornadoes, but couldn't find evidence to blame those oft-cited weather phenomena. NOAA research meteorologist Martin Hoerling tracked three major factors that go into tornadoes — air instability, wind shear and water vapor — and found no long-term trends that point to either climate change or La Nina. That doesn't mean those factors aren't to blame, but Hoerling couldn't show it, he said. PS So CA still well below normal by about 10 degrees. Barely made it to 55 degrees yesterday. I demand a reduction in taxes. The state is not providing the perfect weather we pay for.
