There were many drivers who were used to the old two lane roads and many times got frightened when they ventured onto the freeways. On IS 80 near San Pablo I finally got a driver tp pull over. He had a 1959 license, (expired) driving his vehicle in the left lane at 15 mph. He was frightened and I asked DMV to retest him. I cared about the drivers I stopped and the drivers I assisted. Got to assist the husband to deliver a baby in the back seat of his car on the right shoulder of the Mac Arthur freeway many years ago, and several years later, I watched my wife deliver our daughter as I was driving about 75 mph in our 67 VW going to Kaiser Oakland. Life is amazing and the memories are worth it. Good luck to all and stay safe. jensad
I understand 100 %. I grew up in Oakland and San Leandro. And the area is still in my heart, (eg. Fenton's Ice Cream) and the fun times. I was on BPD in the 60s then CHP. And I too have to agree with you, "I have seen it all" and I am glad I am retired. Souns like you are a long way from the Bay Area. When my beautiful wife retires this year we will travel and hope we canI will seek a new "domicile venue". Good luck to all and stay safe. jensad
I used to work in and around Oakland. I've seen it all!
Hi xwesx I think that was a rather scary situation because if 4 cops pile out of one car with guns on the other vehcile there might be strong arm robbery, killer, dope boys, ect. i was in one with severn other CHP cars that lined up on the Oakland (IS580) Mac Arthur freeway with guns drawn and we took a killer out of a car but only after he threw his two guns out of the car. Amazing event and it done well so that no one got hurt. I am glad you were ok and I know it was a learning moment for you as it was a long time ago for me. Sidebar here. My wife and I are driving back to Illinois going through Utah, Iowa, So. Dakota and then a straight shot to Rockford Illinois to visit our family. Question: In mid to the end of May how much snow is there still left on the roadway? Thks in advance. Good luck to all and stay safe. jensad
You posters are flashing me back to a terrible t/c I handled on the Mac Arthur Freeway in Oakland when a male driver in a 1956 Odlsmobile, was according to witnesses about 75 mpg hit a Park Street off ramp cement abutment. These old vehciles were Sherman tanks in disguise if you get the gist of the exterior. Anyway he was shot/burst up and through the top of the car and was slumped over d.o.a. No seat belts either. Very strange and I never witnessed this kind of t/c again. Finally that 75 mph plus a cement stopper =s one dead driver. Sorry if I offended anyone but I still have guess strange rememberances in my old dotage that I probably will never forget. Hope have a good day and drive safe in the snow and in the rain (Ca.). jensad
