I'm not certain the manufacturing location matters for quality... Other than JD Powers Plant Quality Awards how can you tell vehicle quality in the US has dropped? BTW, East London, South African got the award for 2010...with GM's Lansing Michigan getting the 'Bronze' award for North America. Not too bad for a US Unionized plant. The 'overall' US quality has surpassed the imports. If of course you can quantify what an import or domestic is...

Heck we don't need Shifty to tell you you're insane for even looking. But if you must, I vote for the 2nd one.... it's blue, it's pretty, it's only $4k, what could possibly go wrong? Didja notice the shift knob is missing? What kind of an idiot would try and sell an old luxo car that way? Anyway, not to worry. You can get a shift knob off ebay, and by the time it arrives, you'll probably be thinking about other things, like a bus pass. Oh, I know: Buy the pair and get a discount, since it's the same seller! Then you won't NEED the bus pass. Most days. As my dad likes to say, you're only young once! Cheers -Mathias
Great I will do that. I realize it may not be the best time of the season to negotiate until later in the year when new model years are rolling out. Located in Michigan (near Lansing 48933)and willing to drive a reasonable amount. We do have a Mazda 3 Hach (2006 95,000 miles) that we may consider trading in. I realize they have the loyalty discount as well. I will take a look at the posts and go talk to the local Mazda dealer to see what we can get offered. Thank you for the reply mrchuck.
I'll dissent here on a few points. Driving a beater to a rich kid's school will build character. And where does it say that 16-year-olds need to drive everywhere? On top of which, I'd strongly suggest getting a stick. Nobody else will be able to drive it, it won't get stolen or borrowed, and she can't have three beers and have someone else drive it. A VW needs to be stick anyway. Just yesterday I took my 11-year-old for a driving lesson in an empty parking lot. She does OK with the clutch but we're going very slow, as she can barely see over the steering wheel. Cheap fun, we do it from time to time. The HS she'll go to is 1.5 miles from our house. She can walk or bike, but unless it's pouring rain, she certainly isn't going to drive such a trivial distance. You can check with me in five years, but those are the intentions ;-> Cheers -Mathias
