Re: 2011 oil still fine at 1,000 miles [dinofl] by indydriver on Sun May 08 14:52:02 PDT 2011

dinofl: that certainly makes sense for a lease. However, my daughter bought this Accord believing it would last her for a decade or more, so I'm most interested in doing those things I've learned over 40 years of maintaining many cars and motorcycles. I will be changing the FF no later than 5,000 regardless of what the MM says. I am using Honda Gen-u-ine Full Synthetic SN, GF-5 oil, OE filters and OE drain plug washers. If there is any warranty issue with the engine, they won't be able to blame the maintenance or products used.

Re: Odyssey just died due to NO OIL at 17,000 miles! [shutterbug5] by indydriver on Sun May 08 14:22:50 PDT 2011

Welllll..... It is very difficult to expect Honda to replace your engine when you bring it in seized up with 1 quart in the system. I could see some tech getting distracted and failing to fill the thing back up with oil. This won't make you feel any better, but if anyone besides me works on one of my cars, I always check their work. Lessons learned... The only thing I can come up with to possibly help you is to find out what oil your Firestone store uses (most use Kendall brand semi-syn for bulk oil). Then, if you can get your Honda dealer to capture some of the remaining oil and send it to the manufacturer of Firestone's supply (Kendall is made by ConocoPhillips) for analysis to see if they can determine if it's their oil. If it isn't, then Firestone is guilty. If it is their oil and all of F's paperwork confirms that they filled it and their tech signs an affidavit to that effect, I'd turn to Honda. You're probably going to need a lawyer to get satisfaction and by then, you'll spend much more than a rebuilt engine. Tough spot for you but, well, now you will always check the oil.

One would think that Honda could create a software download that would disable VCM for those customers who so desire.

2011 oil still fine at 1,000 miles by indydriver on Sun May 08 08:07:20 PDT 2011

Rcummelin-agree with you 99%. I don't quite understand why what you've read on the Internet outweighs your own personal experience with two perfect Hondas. I just got under the hood of my daughter's 2011 at nearly 1,000 miles (and 90% on the MM) and the oil level is exactly where it was at delivery-precisely at the full line on the stick. Perhaps the improvements Honda has made in this engine are paying off. Of course it's not my DD so I can't really comment on drivability issues, although she seems very happy with it. I'm quite sure she drives pretty easily, mostly city, with numerous short trips to work and on errands (supposedly hard on oil).

Maybe YOU can find a nicely equipped 2011 Sonata with less than 20,000 miles for $15k or less, but the least used expensive 2011 Sonata within 500 miles of me (which covers a large area including Twin Cities, Chicago, KC, Milwaukee, and Indianapolis) is $16,995. If I take off the mileage limit, the lowest priced 2011 Sonata within 500 miles of me is a stripped GLS AT (plastic wheel covers, no options) with 29.4k miles for $16,390, and it's 360 miles away. And that's a LOT of miles for a car that can't be more than 15 months old. No wonder it's only $16.4k.
