Well, the tooling was there, but they haven't been sharing parts with the Crown Vics since 2007 (or the Mercury Grand Marquis). And the 16 city/24 hwy wasn't helping them meet CAFE I suppose.
Problem solved: sort of... the bulk of the problems on my van (160+K now) were resolved with replacing the catalytic converter. It made perfect sense, after a fasion... my Van would run just fine for about 20 to 30 minutes, then get progressively worse at stalling and shutting off. Kept getting erroneous EGR codes (clear them and it would go away for a few weeks then reappear)... and the EGR valve was "new" a year ago... nonetheless, after replacing the CAT...everything has been fine, until last saturday when I sold the van for MPG reasons... I just can't pay $4 a gallon and drive a 15 year old van that got 22mpg on the highway (3.3l shorty caravan). @ DAWZIN:here's your fix! remove the instrument cluster. Once removed, the entire circuit board on the back is made of flexible mylar. there are points (pins) that are soldered to this circuit. look closely at them, you will see more than one that has fractured solder connections. Re-solder these, or just resolder them all and the problem will go away. If you are not knowledgable about soldering static sensitive devices and practices, find someone who is. These pins connecto to other components in the cluster that can be damaged by excessive heat or static electricity. So, be careful with what you do. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of your Cluster or I could point it out in seconds, but it should be easy to find, or just re-solder/re-work the whole ribbon circuit and you'll be good to go indefinitely. While the cluster is out, you can also replace those pesky instrumane panel lights, maybe spend a few bucks and just replace them or they'll go bad a week later (murphy's law). Good luck.
I filled my wife's CX-7 up on Saturday at a Shell station in Colorado Springs. PUG was listed at $3.979 / gal. I almost traded my 2006 Mazda3 s 5-door for a 2008 MAZDASPEED3 5-door Grand Touring with the same turbocharged 2.3L used in the CX-7. The insurance premium increase ($2600 vs. $1250/year) and 3% higher APR rate (I got a deal on the '06 at 1.9%) were deal-breakers, but the Premium-Fuel requirement also concerned me. The dealer let me take the SPEED3 for the weekend and I wanted to see how it would handle Regular 87-octane....it wasn't pretty.
Dropping the Town Car was a ferocious mistake from my point of view. I wish what they did was kept the Town Car and modernized it along with the Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis. Ford had three cars on my car-shopping A-list, now it has none. There is not one car in Lincoln's lineup I would take over any of their foreign or domestic competition.
