Re: Check Engine Light [a9x2] by walk_the_walk2 on Sun May 08 20:09:41 PDT 2011

Your CEL or MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) as it is called in the Service Manual can come on for up to 6 different reasons related to the EGR system. There are at least 4 or 5 pages in the Service Manual (available for purchase online as a PDF), and at least 6 DTC (diagnostic trouble codes) related to this one system. It would be a mere guess, based on your info, as to whether your problem is truly fixed or not. However, the Service Manual (Workshop Manual) for the 2002 Axiom indicates that the MIL (CEL) can either be turned off by the Isuzu Tech 2 device (the "resetter" tool you mentioned)... I also suspect that if you disconnect your battery for about 40 minutes and then reconnect it that it might have the same effect, however the official Service Manual says the following with regard to a typical EGR fault code (this same passage is repeated for other similar EGR codes throughout the same section of the manual): Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC *The PCM will turn the MIL “OFF” on the third consecutive trip cycle during which the diagnostic has been run and the fault condition is no longer present. * A history DTC P1404 will clear after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles have occurred without a fault. * DTC P1404 can be cleared by using the Tech 2 “Clear Info” function or by disconnecting the PCM battery feed. ********** Given this info, the MIL may also clear up on its own, given enough time. If that doesn't do it, try disconnecting the battery for an extended period, then reconnecting it. If that doesn't work, then take your care to an Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts store (if you live in the US) and borrow their OBD2 scanner and use it to find out what the exact DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) is that your Ax is generating and post it back here or Google it yourself for more info. Hope that helps.

Looking for Gas Saving Mods - Remove 3rd Row Seat? by walk_the_walk2 on Thu Apr 07 11:43:23 PDT 2011

Own a new 2011 Pilot 4WD. This is our first SUV with a 3rd Row Seat, a feature which we never use. I am wondering if anyone has successfully removed the 3rd Row Seat as a modification. It does not look to be easy to do, but possible. Would reduce the weight of the vehicle and possibly improve mileage? Has anyone tried any other ideas to improve mileage? Ours is not great. About 16 MPG combined city/hwy. Would be interested in any comments.

won't start when hot by lewisdavid3 on Tue Mar 01 07:03:23 PST 2011

2002 9-3 SE, 145000 km, well serviced. Last summer it would not start on a hot day. No response when the key was turned (ie the problem was not the battery). Hauled to dealer in Exeter NH. Car started. Dealer not sure but thought it might be the sensor for transmission in park. Did not have the part in stock, so I did nothing. Yesterday, a hot day in Gainesville FL, it would not start. No dealer here. Hauled to Continental Imports, who seemed very competent. The car started on arrival, perhaps because it cooled off during the tow. Shop owner said he could not find the problem, since now there is no problem; he thought it might be something other than the park sensor. What should I do? Where is the gear shift park sensor? Can it be 'shorted', or cooled with a bag of ice? Another discussion item on this forum suggests that the problem is high oil pressure? Is that likely, given that the pressure icon is not displayed?

Re: lease #'s and incentives [explorerx4] by nvbanker on Tue Jan 25 15:48:27 PST 2011

I have 5 Escapes, however only one is AWD. That one is a 2008 with 80,000 miles. The Rear Diff went out at 30,000 miles, was replaced under warranty, and has given us no problem ever since. I really love Escapes and Mariners. Have an 05 Escape, an 06 Escape 2 08s, and a 2010. Also had an 06 Mariner. Have had no problems with any of them other than what I said about the 08. Excellent CUVs.

Re: 2004 Honda Pilot,engine tap or knock [marty651] by walk_the_walk2 on Wed Feb 23 05:05:02 PST 2011

Your slight knocking/tapping sound when the engine is cold sounds like you need a valve adjustment to me. Given that there is probably a timing chain that needs to be replaced at around 100K miles anyway, you could get both done at the same time and save a bit. Another possibility is that you have been running cheap gas that is too low in octane - if this is the case, you could try adding some mid-grade quality fuel instead to see if the problem goes away. (I avoid off-brand low-price gas stations as a rule myself.) However, if the problem is not octane related, you should get a qualified mechanic to look at it, since if it is a valve adjustment, it is not a real expensive fix. Hope that helps.
