Worth the Wait by kyrpto on Mon May 02 11:47:59 PDT 2011

On Hyundai dealer websites it has a "good through May 2nd" footnote on the .9% and 1.9% offer. Wonder if they will continue this? Toyota took several years to get lower than 2.9 on the Camry or Highlander hybrids, and even longer on the Prius. We almost opted for a Camry hybrid demo @$25,000 but am so glad we waited for the Hyundai hybrids to finally hit. Previously I had been told mid-May to June by several high volume dealers in 2 states; nobody seemed to really know then I saw 3 hybrids listed on Fairfax Hyundai’s website. I called and spoke with a veteran sales guy with whom I had talked a while back. Only 1 hybrid had been delivered. Made the deal over the phone the day before the train ride. My wife will be commuting 75 miles per day but she doesn’t have the same soft right foot as me. She will have difficulty matching that initial 47.5 MPG. We’ll be doing a manual calculation @ fill up and in the past all our cars w/ trip computers generally were 1 - 2 miles higher than calculating. Even so 44 or 45 MPG right out of the box is still very, very, good.

I've had the same experience this past weekend at Fitzgerald's Lakeforest Hyundai, in Gaithersburg, MD. We were on our way to Criswell Honda to buy an '11 Civic LX and we thought we stop by the Hyundai dealership to test drive the Elantra to see if it was worth it. The dealership was very busy. We were outside looking at cars for 15 minutes and no one came by to greet us. Same story inside, and no one cared to greet us there either. We finally sat in a corner and I went to the front desk and just stood there hoping that one of the four salesmen who were chatting would walk up to me. A minute passed and no one gave a damn. I finally asked them that I was looking for an Elantra GLS. The first guy looked at the second guy who looked at the third as if he was IT. He asked me what I was looking for and took me outside to show me a GLS which he couldn't find. We went inside and he offered a GLS for 18.5. I told him Fairfax Hyundai was offering a GLS with package 3 for 18.2-18.4 which was true, but I didn't have an email from them. He talked to his manager and came back and said with no proof in the form of an email or fax or something, no deal to match their price. I walked out because they were one bunch of arrogant people. I have other expletives to describe them but I'd rather keep this post clean. I am a proud owner of an '11 Civic LX Sedan now.

Hybrid Home Run by kyrpto on Fri Apr 29 20:40:26 PDT 2011

Purchased possibly the first Hybrid Sonata in Virginia today from Fairfax Hyundai. Rode an Amtrak train from nearby Danville, Va. To Manassas this morning - it was 3 hrs. late due to storm damage in Alabama - took a half mile test drive to fill up the car, did the paperwork, $26,700 (Pac 1) plus $389 processing, and drove back to Southside Virginia mostly via Route 29. Drove about 30 miles on I 66 first. On this "green" vehicle I got an amazing 47.5 MPG from NOVA to my carport, just over 250 miles. Very little AC. Trip computer indicates an almost 400 mile range still remaining. Having previously owned a 1st gen Highlander Hybrid for 4 years helped me improve MPG skills. The Hyundai’s displays also make it easy to raise the MPG. And this is a strong hybrid system. My eco score began at 1 in NOVA and ended up a 14 at home. The Fairfax dealership is 25 years old and sells about 300 cars per month. Also got a call from a Greensboro, NC (100 units monthly) dealership Thursday. They got notification of 2 Sonata hybrids “on the truck.” Pearson, the big outfit in Richmond, was still waiting when I talked with them midweek. Nationwide you can get .9% and 1.9% on 36 and 48 months respectively so basically another home run for Hyundai, IMO. This brand is on fire what with the Japanese situation and increasing demand for higher mileage cars. I'm predicting this sporty Sonata Hybrid will be popping up all over shortly.

Re: Good deals in DC Area [embeedee] by postnobills on Tue Apr 19 16:44:51 PDT 2011

Hi embeedee (and rdillier), I paid $16,965 plus tax, title and "doc fees" of $389. This was for the GLS automatic with preferred, floormats and ipod cable. It was actually a bit less than I was expecting based on my prior research. The iPod cable was not part of the car as packaged, so I offered $1000 under invoice plus the free ipod cable. They showed me the invoice of $17,965. As far as I can tell it did not include any regional advertising fee, which is why my deal seems better than the information from truecar.com. The dealer holdback and the current mfr. to dealer incentive totals a little over $1000, so I figure they made about $400 gross profit on this sale, plus any additional volume incentives they earn from the mfr. Seemed like a good deal to me! I bought it at Fairfax Hyundai. Like most dealers in VA, they charge exorbitant doc fees (compared to MD with its $100 maximum by law), but even factoring this into account they were still a few hundred $ cheaper all-in than any other area dealer, including Fitzgerald. Also, they threw in free oil changes and state inspections for as long as I own the car. Not only is Fairfax closer to my home than Fitz or the other MD dealers, but I was lucky enough to have a knowledgeable salesman and a totally low-key finance manager. I had visited Fitzgerald a few months ago when I started looking at this car and was shocked by how poor the salesman there was (arrogance plus stupidity is a bad combination!!); I swear I knew more about the car than he did after I had invested just a couple of hours noodling around online.

Re: Here's a "project" for ya! [explorerx4] by srs_49 on Wed Apr 13 03:47:06 PDT 2011

Number of years ago my sister and her husband had a motorhome. They kept it parked on the cul-de-sac in front if their house, which made it almost impossible for anyone else to park around it. This was in one of those yuppity northern Virginia areas - Fairfax County, I think. On one trip my sister was driving so her husband could get some sleep. He figured it would be OK as she was on an interstate - the only roads where she felt comfortable with it. Only thing was, it was a toll road and she got the thing stuck in the toll plaza, so my BIL had to be roused up to get it out.
