Re: El Patio Motel [lemko] by michaell on Tue Jan 18 12:17:16 PST 2011

A pool was required if you had kids. So true. In the summer of '71, my family took a vacation where we drove from California to New York and back ... in a '68 VW Squareback. Dad drove, mom rode shotgun, my 4 year old sister rode on her lap and my 7 year old self had what little space was available with the rear seat folded down and luggage piled in. The daily agenda was to arise around 4AM and get on the road, drive for approx. 12 hours, then find a hotel with pool to relax / refresh in. Stopping around 4 in the afternoon guaranteed enough daylight to enjoy the pool. The places we stopped on the way out were: Evanston, WY Kearney, NE Mendota, IL (Dad had a Navy buddy who lived there) Youngstown, OH

I lived in Chicago for 13 years and had the following commutes: - Hoffman Estates to downtown Chicago - New Town to Franklin Park - Lincolnshire to downtown Chicago - Wrigleyville to Evanston - Old Town Triangle to Glen Ellyn - Lisle to downtown Chicago FWIW, none of those commutes in Chicago was anywhere near as bad as the commutes that I crawled through in Los Angeles and Manhattan.

First, realize that the EOS, Cadillac XLR, Pontiac G6 convert, and Mercedes and BMW with convertible hardtops are all mechanically similar in the fact that there's a ton of cables, pivots, pulleys, hinges, pistons, hydraulic rams, pumps, electronic sensors, and miles of wire. All these things are to some degree sensitive to corrosion, and are probably not ALL made of stainless steel. Corrosion-resistant coatings are only so good, and if you live in a salt-spray atmosphere, you may want to re-think ANY hard-top convertible. As for the dealer, find out what training THE convertible top technician has, and ask for customer references. The one in Evanston, IL can get the problem solved, but it has taken multiple visits and multiple days on each visit. And my EOS only has 9000 miles on it. And Lake Michigan is NOT salt-water.

Now that I think about it, if I were buying a new vehicle, I think distance-to-dealer may sway my decision a little bit, though not a ton. When I had a Mazda, there were two dealers on the north side of Chicago. There are now ZERO Mazda dealers in the ENTIRE city of Chicago; closest to me is in Evanston (13 miles), not exactly far, but in this traffic, that's a solid half hour drive. Our 'main drags' (Cicero and Western Avenues) have had alarming amounts of closures (most recently, Mitsubishi and Dodge). I guess not such a big deal, but something to think about.

>> Link was provided above, and look who's talking. No, that link does not have any info that "Both Outlander and Caliber/Compass are supplied the same AWD system from Borg Warner", so it appears to be just your specuation. This is a link to my local Subaru dealer: http://www.evanston.subaru.com/index.htm
