I am surprised a dealer would behave in such a manner, but not a potential client. It may come as a surprise to many people, but the dealerships are in business to make money. I believe competition has forced shrinking margins on the dealers and the economy has lowered their volume.... which equals, sadly, is that car dealers are now hiring their sales staff by the pound, not on ability or ethics. As for the angered potential customers ... move on ... there are plenty of other dealers to work with and life is too short to be angry. Any who ... just for a laugh ... I was trying to purchase a car from Bloomfield Honda in the Detoilet (Detroit) suburbs. I couldn't get the salesman to follow through on returning calls or emails ... until finally he sent me an email as follows: What do you possibly need of my time? You've test drove the car 3 times. You told me your wife would make the decision and I don't have time for you anymore ... I responded to him by stating a few facts: I know we all look the same, but A. I visited your dealership on a Saturday when you were too busy ... which I am happy for you .... B. I explained to you I don't feel test driving a minivan is necessary. After all, this isn't a Ferrari. C. I am not married (actually happily divorced :op ) ... and knowing the sad state of the economy in Detroit I apologize for interrupting your day ... Like I said before ... always negotiate and/or leave the dealership with a smile ... it doesn't cost anything.... .... and no, I still haven't picked up a van yet. I think I intimidate the dealers by axing "so ... what is the price" :Op
My remote start on my 2005 Malibu Maxx went out and the Chevy dealer said it was the hood latch sensor that was the problem. The sensor was malfunctioning and the computer was sensing that the hood was open so the remote start would not work. They wanted $230 to replace the hood latch. Being the cheapskate that I am (and knowing I could replace the hood latch myself) I ordered the part online for $80 and put it in myself. A few bolts and unhooking a wiring harness & hood release cable and the latch was replaced and the problem was fixed. The GM part number for the hood latch assembly is #20763655.
I was recently talking to Prestige in Ramsey about some 3 series CPOs but never ventured up there. Something about the salesman I spoke to a few times that I just didn't like the approach. I know they have a lot of cars and some good deals but I couldn't answer you question about residual values, etc. I would just get all the specs on the car and do appraisals from edmunds, kbb and nada and see what the average is vs the dealer's price and go from there. I just purchased a 07 335xi w/ 15K miles, premium and cold weather weather packages, original maintenance until 11/2011 then CPO for two more years. Traded in my 2000 Audi A4 2.8 quattro and got the car for 23,400. I have my fingers crossed that the HPFP holds out or at least fails within the 10yr/120K mile warranty. BMW of Bloomfield. I would check them out. Very nice staff, no pressure tactics and upfront. I would appreciate anyone giving me a reference for a reputable independent mechanic who works on BMW's in the tri state area, northern NJ preferrably, Bergen county. Thanks.
Thank You Car_man! I was able to work up the following deal with a local dealer in NNJ. Would be interested in what others on the forum think. Can someone confirm that for November Promo the security deposit is waived e.g. $0 for a 5 series? This is what the BMW website says but is not reflected in dealers due at signing fees. 2011 BMW 535xi Sedan - Deep Sea Blue Met. Prem. Pkg. I'm in Ann Arbor MI and set a wide net with Edmunds car search. And used Zag.com to see prices. Started in Oct 1. Used zip codes in: ann arbor mi, bloomfield mi, ohio, lansing, brighton. And did it all online, except I did also go into the local Honda dealer Howard Cooper. And left after they wouldnt help me out. Their view was busy people needed the car and were satisfied with paying a little extra. Granted their costs are a little higher because of the location so you will never get a true best deal. They were fine, sent out tons of automated emails. Good thing I sent up an email just for this purchase. So I sent them a bunch of delayed(automated) emails (see Outlook->Options->Delay Delivery). It was certainly convenient, but gosh I'll put in a few extra days of searching to save $3k. However, it reaches a point where you just have to buy. The prices on this thing drop week to week. But looking at the 2010 prices in September there is a limit. So obviously it's a function of time. If you want the cheapest price on '11 Ody then wait 10 yrs. Point is you got to get the best price at the time you're in need of it. Zag prices didnt budge until last week since the car model is new. Right now Zag price is $39,290, Avg price: $41,024. I eventually get the "great" zag price. Ohio had the best first prices. Ann Arbor dropped price from over MSRP $600 a day for a few days, still way over priced. Bloomfield wouldnt budge and Brighton had nothing good even though I explained to the guy that he could charge locals high amounts, but typically he would never get someone from ann arbor's business so he might as well make the sale and make a little, and give me a deal. After telling them how to run their business (they love that) it was a no go. At this point Honda Marysville Ohio had the best price at $38,882. They seem like a great dealer. But being a 2 hour drive I preferred something closer. Capital Honda in (okemos) Lansing (online) then gave me a great price at: Odyssey Touring '11 $38700 (including destination) Free Winter Mats and Flaps $190 destination plust title/reg All together $41,272(no trade) They ordered the hard to find Smoky Topaz, got a brand spanking new one with 3 miles on it, made in Alabama and had it in 2 weeks. Drove an hour and picked it up. I highly recommend them, use zip code 48864. No hassles, no pushing nonsense dealer added junk. Some thoughts: If you're desperate (coming off a lease or don't have a car or your wife is 9 months pregnant) then the local guys have you. If you can wait, be patient and not rush in, and be willing to walk away then you can get a fair price. If I was a dealer: I would charge my locals a fair/medium/market value price. For my Internet sales for people who live > 50 minutes away I would charge them a LOW price. It's a customer you're never going to get normally, just make the sale. Remember the best thing they can do for you is NOT sell you the car. About the car: It's a sweet car, handles great, the electronics are very cool and everything seems be done right. If you can afford it then get the Touring.
